A Lily SMILE Recipient's Perseverence Pays off

Chandra Bhushan Mishra comes from a poor family where his father has been a building electrician earning a mere Rs. 3000/- per month supporting a family of five. Chandra through outside private tutoring earned whatever little possible to help the family. He was a proud recipient of Lily SMILE scholarship from 2006 to 2012.

After completing his graduation, Chandra Bushan has just been offered an assignment with Mahindra Satyam (http://www.mahindrasatyam.com/ ) at Rs 1.5 lacs per annum with the possibility of a global assignment at a Multinational Company.

Dhulai DMS Gets 2nd High School Coaching Home

At the behest of Purnendu and Kajori Dasgupta of Arlington , Texas Lily Foundation opened a new Coaching Home in the Bankura hamlet of Dhulai in January 2013 (picture shows announcement event in Dec 2012). Twenty students are admitted to get coaching in English and Math to better prepare for the Madhyamik Board exam. The name of the school is “DMS Institute High School Coaching Home 2”.

All High School Coaching Homes have an excellent track record of achieving high degree of success in graduation and increasing number scoring 60% marks or above from a group of students who typically have been on the pass-fail borderline at admission.

Fun-filled 12th Annual Fundraising Dinner 2012

Lily Foundation hosted its XIIth Annual Appreciation Dinner at Fun Asia Richardson, TX on September 8th 2012. All proceeds from the fund raising dinner serve education projects (unless mentioned differently). The event this year started with a social cocktail hour, followed by live auction, raffle tickets, a sumptuous dinner concluding with an hour long cultural program performed by local artists. Local Mayor Bob Townsend was present as the keynote speaker. The event got publicity through several media - air waves, print, Facebook - and we had record attendance this year with several generous donations.
Annual Education Conference 2012 in Kolkata

The IX th Annual Education Conference in Birla Institute of Art and Culture was an all-day event to remember.  Several highly acclaimed speakers from the academic world of Kolkata adored the occasion. Chief Guest Prof. Subimal Sen, former chairman of West Bengal Council of Higher Education and retired director of Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics reminded students of their responsibility to give back when they became established in life. The packed hall of 250 students, teachers and honorable guests listened to the students with rapt attention as they spoke about their own plight to acquiring higher education in the face of dire poverty through timely assistance from Lily Foundation. Rashmi Sharma, English Channel and Strait of Gibraltar Swimmer , reminded of the need for early determination of goals in life and relentless pursuance.

“SMILE-High” achievers were rewarded for performance. Best-Performing High School Coaching Home award went to Narrah for several years in a row. Shampa Das was rewarded by her long-time sponsor for breaking her family poverty cycle as she just became a professional nurse after achieving high marks in graduating exam.

New SMILE sponsorship and general donations came through from the guests.

Feed-the-Needy Attracts Many New Faces in its

20th Triumphant Year

Feed-the-Needy Program on November 18th 2012 as pre-Thanksgiving treat was a grand success as it has been in the past 20 years!
We added on more volunteer participants this year starting from elementary school kids to teenagers. They say charity begins at home and sure enough the kids in a homely atmosphere were all excited to help and serve. All kids received a certificate of participation.  We entirely revamped our menu under the guidance of our master chef Mohammad Veerji. All adult participants were assistant chefs. Tasty recipes, like Chicken Fajita, and all the sides to go along with it were prepared with raw ingredients and lots of goodwill. The chefs then turned into hosts, all standing and serving the folks hot freshly cooked food with salad, tortillas and dessert. Our new participants had the opportunity to learn more about the activities of Lily Foundation and expressed willingness to participate in such events in the future.
The Gospel residents and street residents all enjoyed the food with multiple rounds. The Union Gospel Mission (UGM), Fort Worth, leaders appreciated the team for the excellent treats to the homeless. We feel proud to be associated with UGM which is an example of dedication to the human cause.

Upcoming Attraction:

The next regularly scheduled luncheon will be served at UGM, on Mother’s Day in May 2013. Don't miss the group-cooking fun. More details on the Program at

Solar Lamp Distribution Again - Light in the Dark -

literally

Although hard to imagine, there are homes who are yet to get power supply lines. Some of our high-end SMILE scholars are literally still in the dark at their mud-and-straw cottages. Lily Foundation identified such students at night and delivered the solar lamps.  Lily Foundation thanks Ms. Andrea Sreshta and her father Joseph Sreshta for their generosity in helping improve the quality of life for the second time. The lamps are energized during the day in order to dispense 2/3 hours of continuous light for study at night.
