Year 2009-2010 Annual Report

=====================================================================================

Dear Patrons,

Let me present to you our activities for the year 2009-2010.

In spite of the global economic meltdown we were able to maintain our growth. We opened our 5th High School coaching center at Hijladiha. We opened our 4th computer center at Kulbani High School. We have started offering certification and placement service at the Hotor center in partnership with the local government.

The key highlights include:

·         8  AALO primary coaching centers serving 100 elementary school students.

·         7 AALO study homes serving 170 pre-elementary school students.

·         4 AALO high school coaching centers serving 90 students.

·         120 SMILE scholarships for 113 high school and 7 professional college students.

·         5 education centers including computer centers and vocational training center, now serving 750 students.

·         Over 85% of our SMILE students graduated both the Class-X and Class-XII board exams in the 1st division,  for the 5th year in a row.

·         Continuing cooperation with organizations like Rotary Club, Union Gospel Mission church for homeless feeding, North Texas Hindu Mandir, Moyee Foundation, Antorik and WEBEL (local Govt. organization).

·         Launched internship programs for US students who want to teach in our schools.

·         Launched  certification and placement services in association with WEBEL at Hotor computer center.

·         Provided aid to Dallas Independent School District students for school supplies.

AALO Centers

Our 19 AALO centers serve a wide swath of students at multiple level of education from primary to high school benefitting over 360 students. We completed an audit of the course material by an experienced educator from the Navanalanda School system and implemented the suggested changes. One of our major donors Ms Sadhana Aggarwal from India has launched a program to upgrade the classrooms in 4 AALO homes. We launched an internship program for US students starting with two students from Dallas who taught at our schools over the summer. We had another group of US students who toured our schools for a photo-journalism project.

One of the biggest challenges facing the students from poor families is the very high drop-out rate. Our  approach is therefore to target students from extremely poor families at key stages of their academic life to prevent them from dropping out from school. By providing academic support through these AALO centers we strive to ensure that these students do not drop-out from the schools and graduate through the board exam.

We provide tutors to students in difficult subjects like mathematics, science and language courses in both traditional classroom as well as coaching formats. Prior to joining the centers, these students generally scored very poorly, but demonstrated significantly improved results in the board exam after attending the classes.

Lily Foundation Vocational and Computer Centers.

We currently have 5 major centers serving over 760 students. These include 3 older computers centers  DMS Institute at Dhulai, RN Pal Institute at Hotor and the Ghatsila Computer Centre and the vocational training center at Narrah. We opened a 4th computer center at Kulbani High School, Paschim Medinipur.

These centers are providing a valuable service for high school students in these areas which lack computer resources. We have also launched a certification program in association with a local government organization WEBEL. We have also started a career placement service program to help place the students.

Our first  vocational center in Narrah is teaching tailoring classes to 15 girls.  The girls are taught sewing, cutting, and tailoring with a future plan to add embroidery classes.

SMILE Scholarships

This continues to be one of the most successful programs to date and our SMILE scholars routinely graduate with first division marks year after year, a huge achievement considering the extremely disadvantaged background of each of these students. Like previous 4 years a large majority (85%) of the scholars graduated in the 1st division, an impressive record given the extremely challenging backgrounds these students hail from.  We have maintained our impressive growth of SMILE scholars. We increased the number of scholars from 101 to 120, a growth of 20%. The Smile program continues to enable these students to graduate and provides an opportunity for their families to come out of the vicious cycle of poverty.

Feed The Needy

Lily Foundation’s trademark event continues to be Feed The Needy luncheons which are held around the mother’s day in May and around thanksgiving in November. These events are held at the Union Gospel Mission Church in Fort Worth.  Over 200 homeless people are fed at these events.  We also encourage volunteers and students to participate in these events and we provide them with certificates for their service.

Fund Raising/Publicity/Other activities

The annual fund raising dinner was held on June 26th to raise funds, recognize the contributors, and present Lily’s activities to our patrons.

We have been also striving to increase our cooperation with other local organizations like Indian Association of North Texas,  Antorik-BOGD, Moyee Foundation and North Texas Hindu Mandir (NTHM) in Dallas. In India we are building cooperation with Rotary Club and WEBEL. We have started offering summer internship positions to US students interested in teaching at our schools. We started the program with two students from Dallas area who spent their summer teaching at our

Looking forward

Lily Foundation is a bridge connecting your helping hand to the people who need it the most, and your support helps in sustaining lives of real people with real dreams and aspirations. When you support a poor student, you not only help his immediate family, but you ultimately support the building of the nation’s foundation by supporting the upcoming generation, so that we can build a just, democratic and educated society. Our teachers in the field continue to exhibit their devotion to charity by working under difficult conditions, and the faces of the children we serve provide us the inspiration to continue our work. So we look forward to your continued support in the future.

We are continuously trying to improve our operational efficiency and always welcome your feedback. The key areas of focus for 2010 are:

a) Upgrade our classroom facilities at all our centers and start a 2nd library.

b) Expand our association with like-minded organizations in India and USA

c) Continually review our operations to ensure that your contributions are used in the most efficient fashion while providing the best service for our children.

d) Expand our activities from teaching to support services like providing certification and placement services for our graduates.
